Understanding your Well Pump System

5 Critical Well Pump Problems You Need To Know

One of my favorite topics to discuss is Well Systems. I've put together a list of 5 critical well pump problems you need to know if you're experiencing well pump problems.

  1. The first and most common issue that well pumps encounter is a malfunctioning pressure tank, which frequently leads to well pump failure. When the well pump is subjected to frequent on/off cycling and short cycling, even a reliable pump cannot withstand the strain, often resulting in failure.
  2. Second, if your well is not producing enough water, it may lead to air cavitation, which is the formation of air bubbles in the water. This can result in the entry of air into your water lines, leading to potential issues with your water system. Additionally, unequal loading of impellers, which are the rotating components of the pump, can cause damage to both the impellers and the bearings inside the well pump. This can impact the overall performance and lifespan of the well pump.
  3. Insufficient or fluctuating electrical supply to the well pump, such as inconsistent voltage or power surges, can lead to the premature burning out of the motor. This is especially likely if the wiring is old or not adequately proportioned for the system.
  4. When you observe sediment or sand in canister-type filters or inside toilet tanks, it could be a sign of a problem with the well pump. In such cases, it is important to address the issue promptly by addressing the well pump. The first step would be to pull the well pump and then clean out the well to remove any accumulated sediment or sand. Additionally, it is crucial to thoroughly clean the sieve screen located at the bottom of the well casing to ensure proper functioning and prevent future issues.
  5. Poor water quality can have a detrimental impact on your well system. It can result in the accumulation of minerals like manganese, leading to the clogging of the well system and a decrease in the efficiency of the well pump. This can ultimately shorten the lifespan of the well pump and cause operational issues.

What Kind Of Maintenance Is Needed On A Well System?

This is a great question that I get quite often.
Maintaining your well system involves regularly checking the pressure in the air pressure tank to ensure it is at the proper level. Pressure tank and switch balancing is a critical process that involves keeping the air pressure at the recommended level to prevent well pump failure. By monitoring and adjusting the air pressure as needed, you can effectively sustain the optimal performance and durability of your well system. This practice not only helps in preventing equipment breakdowns but also contributes to the overall efficiency and long-term functionality of your well system.

Inadequately maintained or neglected well pressure tanks are the leading cause of premature well pump failure. Regular maintenance of well pressure tanks is vital, and it is recommended to have them serviced annually at a minimum. This includes checking for rust, ensuring proper pressure levels, and inspecting for any signs of wear or damage. Regular maintenance can significantly extend the life of your well pump system and prevent costly repairs.

In addition to commonly occurring mineral buildup, our diagnostic process enables us to identify less common issues that may have the potential to develop into significant problems. By alerting you to these issues early, we aim to help you address them before they become major concerns, ultimately saving you money on potential repair costs.
